The GloCal Health Fellowship is excited to share that two of its alumni are collaborating on a new research study to assess dementia and frailty among older persons in rural Eastern Uganda.
Dr. Stephen Ojiambo Wandera, a gerontologist and demographer at Makerere University, and Dr. Monica Maria Diaz, a neurologist, and an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, initially connected when they were both GloCal fellows in the 2019-2020 cohort.
Working together, they have now been awarded a grant through the Alzheimer’s Association to conduct critically important research on both the prevalence of, and risk factors for, frailty and dementia among older persons in rural Eastern Uganda. In addition, their investigation will explore the experiences of caregivers of these older people with dementia or frailty. Read more about their study here.
