We are very pleased to share that current GloCal fellow Schola Matovu, PhD, RN, has been presented with the prestigious 2022 Jane Norbeck Distinguished Service Award from the UCSF School of Nursing! For more than three decades, this award has honored remarkable UCSF School of Nursing graduates who have made a significant contribution to the profession. To be selected to join the outstanding group of award recipients that includes Dr. Marilyn Chow (Living Legend of the American Academy of Nursing and retired Vice President of National Patient Care Services and Innovation at Kaiser Permanente), Dr. Catherine L. Gilliss (Dean and Margretta M. Styles Professor of Nursing, UCSF) and Dr. Patricia E. Benner (nursing theorist, academic and author), among other phenomenal nurse leaders is truly an honor!

As a gerontological nursing researcher, Dr. Matovu is working to advance science and contribute to alleviating social injustices such as poverty, gender and health inequalities in the global community. This year, her GloCal research project is testing the feasibility and acceptability of an income-generating activity aimed to promote economic empowerment and health of grandmother-caregivers to grandchildren in rural Uganda. Dr. Matovu has also been an invited speaker at two conferences in recent months. In February, she gave a keynote speech at the Nurse & Midwives Conference in Kampala, hosted by Rotary International. At this conference, she addressed an audience of 150 participants on “Empowering Nurses and Midwives to Empower Mothers and Children.” Then in April, she gave a talk at the Utah Organization of Nurse Leaders Conference on “Women and Leadership: Leading Self, Leading (with) Others, Leading Change”.
