The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) recently profiled the research of GloCal Fellow Lara Schwarz in its December 2021 Global Environmental Health Newsletter. Ms. Schwarz is one of three GloCal fellows supported by NIEHS this year. A PhD candidate in the UC San Diego and San Diego State University Joint Doctoral Program in Global Health, Ms. Schwarz studies the impact of environmental exposures on health disparities. She is spending her 2021-2022 GloCal Health Fellowship year assessing the role of wildfire smoke in driving adverse health outcomes – including COVID-19 outcomes – on each side of the San Diego/Tijuana border. She explores the question: How do differing social conditions influence the health impacts of environmental exposures?
