Fogarty International Center renews funding for GloCal Health Fellowships

July 12, 2017

Thfellowships/glocal-health-fellowship/indexe University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI) will continue to provide mentored research fellowships through a renewed grant for the GloCal Health Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center (FIC).

Managed and supported by UCGHI, the GloCal Health Fellowship enables doctoral and professional students and postdoctoral fellows from the University of California and low- and middle-income countries to spend the year-long fellowship studying diseases and conditions at international research sites in developing countries. Participants are matched with leading global health faculty and investigators from the GloCal Health Fellowship Consortium – comprised of UCSF, UCLA, UC San Diego and UC Davis – and top international institutions.  The goal of the program is to provide hands-on career development for the next generation of global health leaders.

UCGHI has offered GloCal Health Fellowships since 2012, training more than 70 fellows in the first five-year grant cycle. With the renewed support from FIC, the GloCal Health Fellowship program will offer fellowships for at least five additional years.

Twelve 2017-18 fellows begin their fellowships this month. From examining the role of self-testing in identifying HIV infection in Malawi, to evaluating how reading to infants impacts socio-emotional development in Peru, to investigating the influence of climate change on malaria transmission in Southern Africa, the new fellows are working towards developing transformative solutions to some of global health’s toughest challenges.

More information on the GloCal Health Fellowship program is available on the UCGHI website.
